Why You MUST Stop Buying Canned Tomatoes
I love having tomatoes on hand, even when they’re not in season. They come in handy to add to a quick soup, make a pasta sauce or home made pizza. But I don’t buy them in cans, I only buy them in glass or the little boxes that you probably have noticed many canned items such as beans and soups being switched to recently.
The lining of most cans contain BPA – a toxic chemical which has been linked to increased risk of cancers (especially prostate and breast), diabetes, heart disease, reproductive abnormalities, neurological effects and many other serious health concerns. Because of this you should really be trying to avoid cans anyways but the high acidity in tomatoes causes the BPA to leach right into your food. For more information on how BPA is negatively affecting your health, take a look at this article on Medical News Today.
Most cans are lined with plastic to prevent them from rusting. Most of these linings contain BPA, a toxic chemical linked to reproductive abnormalities, neurological effects, heightened risk of breast and prostate cancers, diabetes, heart disease and other serious health problems. According to Consumer Reports’ testing, just a couple of servings of canned food can exceed the safety limits for daily BPA exposure for children.
The high acidity of a tomatoes causes the BPA to readily leach into your food.
Some products, such as Eden Organics, have BPA free cans but with so many other options available nowadays I recommend avoiding cans as often as possible, even if it’s not an acidic tomato, the small difference in price can make a huge difference in your health- and you’re worth it!
