My Vitamin Chest

Vitamins and supplements are very individual and depend on a variety of factors. When I design a supplement regimen for a client some of the things I take into account are: age, sex, current deficiencies, health problems and risk factors. Dose is also dependent on the same list of factors and what you’re looking to achieve.

Having said that, there are some vitamins I tend to reccommend pretty regularly to almost everyone. These include:

  • Vitamin D3

Needed for the body to properly absorb and regulate calcium levels in the blood (for building bones and teeth, muscle contraction, trasmiting nerve impluses). Regulates cell growth and maintains immune system integrity and cardiovascular health. Plays an important role in regulating mood by alleviating depression and preserving cognitive function. Some symptoms of vitamin d deficiency include: high blood pressure, rickets, persisent tired feeling, depression, insomnia and muscle pain

  • Omega 3 EFA’s

Some health issues that can be positivley affected by consuming Omega 3 fats include: cancer, heart disease, asthma, rhematoid arthritis, obesity, diabetes and ADD/ADHD. In high amounts it benefits brain function and may also improve alzheimers, macular degeneration, memory problems and reducing inflamation. Omega 3 fats are needed for the production of prostaglandins. Physiological functions regulated by prostaglandins include blood clotting, nerve transmission, kidney function, smooth muscle contraction, allergic responses as well as the production of other hormones.

Dr. Mercola has some good articles on the importance of Omega 3 EFA’s.

  • Multivitamin

We simply do not get enough vitamins from our food nowadays. The soil has been depleted from over-use, we eat processed foods and not enough fruits and vegetables. Even though I often forget to take mine I do think it’s very important.

I get a lot of questions about what I take on a regular basis. I take quite a few things for a number of reasons. I’m happy to share my list but remember that this is very specific to my body, the fact that I’m a nursing mother, and my previous health conditions that I try to keep at bay.

What are some things hiding in your vitamin chest? I love learning about what people take and why, so share your info please!
