Are you clean or dirty?

sweet-potato

I love sweet potato!!

In an attempt to figure out what food to give Annabelle next I’ve done some digging. We started with sweet potato then on to avocado, green beans, peas, carrots and asparagus. Annabelle refused both green beans and asparagus. So the goal is to give her something tomorrow that she’ll actually like. Apparently berries have some risk for allergens so that’s off the list and I’m not sure I want to start fruits quite yet, I’d rather keep doing veggies and add fruit for breakfast once she moves up to eating solids twice a day.

Since I’m making homemade baby food I decided to take a look at the dirty dozen. The dirty dozen are the 12 fruits and vegetables you should absolutely buy organic because they have the highest amounts of pesticides. Apparently if your daily 5 servings of fruit and vegetables come from the dirty dozen you’re consuming 14 different types of pesticides. Yum. Not exactly a healthy first food for my princess. If you want more info read this Huffington Post article.

So here’s the updated 2011 dirty dozen:

apples, celery, strawberries, peaches, spinach, nectarines, imported grapes, sweet bell peppers, potatoes, domestic blueberries, lettuce, kale/collard greens.

Don’t fret my pet, you don’t have to buy everything organic. There’s the clean 15 which are the safest (least amount of pesticides) to buy non organic. For more info go here

Clean 15: onions, avocado, sweet corn, pineapple, mangos, sweet peas, asparagus, kiwi, cabbage, eggplant, cantaloupe, watermelon, grapefruit, sweet potato and honeydew melon.

I’m still not closer in deciding what to make tomorrow but at least I can make an informed decision on whether or not to buy organic. Any suggestions on what veggies your babies have loved?
